Artists are invited to submit qualifications for a large scale project(s) on site of the new Tucson Mall Plaza area located between the free standing Cheesecake Factory and R.E.I. buildings.

LOCATION

The Tucson Mall is located at, 4500 N. Oracle Road, Tucson, Arizona 85705. The site has recently undergone a major expansion , adding several new restaurants and retailers in a dynamic streetscape. The completion of the Tucson Mall expansion will solidify Tucson Mall's position as the largest shopping and dining destination in Southern Arizona.

BACKGROUND

GGP has been in the shopping center business for over fifty years. One of the nation's largest REITs, General Growth owns, develops, operates, and/or manages shopping malls in 44 states. GGP has ownership interests in and/or
management responsibility for more than 200 regional shopping malls totaling approximately 200 million square feet of retail space. In Southern Arizona, General Growth Properties owns and manages both Park Place Mall and Tucson Mall. This public art project will take place on site at the Tucson Mall property located on Tucson’s Northwest side of town.

Tucson Mall is Southern Arizona’s premier shopping and dining destination. Guests will enjoy sensational shopping with over 200 specialty shops and four department stores. The mall features the most popular retailers in the country
including H & M, Sephora, Build-A-Bear Workshop, Metropark and REI. Tourists will find unique treasures on Arizona Avenue, a collection of specialty boutiques devoted to art, gifts and jewelry from Arizona. After a full day of shopping, delectable dining awaits shoppers at The Cheesecake Factory, Shane’s Rib Shack, Red Robin, Mimi’s Café and more.

PROJECT GOALS

The below goals will aid in the selection of the commissioned artwork The project(s) should be an original, site specific design fabricated in safe, durable, low maintenance materials that withstand heavy direct contact with the public and the harsh Arizona climate in the summer months.

Proposals should be dynamic forward thinking and thematic in included elements. The project committee seeks to commission a functional and interactive piece of permanent artwork for the site.

Pedestrians frequently pass through the plaza on their way to various destinations within the Mall. Tucson Mall attracts over 18 million shoppers each and every year. It is the intent for the Plaza to remain a gathering area and focal point for pedestrians. The plaza itself is approximately 6,000 square feet, although this project will be restricted a maximum of 20 feet high(minimum of 15 feet high), with a foot print not to exceed 15-20 feet in diameter.

A successful project will create its own sense of encounter and engagement at this gateway, either through visual distinction or an interaction.

This call to artist seeks proposals from artists across disciplines to present contemporary in thought and process art projects, with both functional and interactive elements in the public spaces in the Plaza. Projects should be able to have an impact in a space defined by dynamic activity and continuous, competing visual stimuli. While the use of color and contemporary and abstract ideas are encouraged, water elements are discouraged in the proposal process.

ARTIST ELIGIBILITY

The request for qualifications is open to all artists or artist-teams that may demonstrate a level of experience and professionalism that is commensurate with this project’s scope and budget limitations.

ART BUDGET

The artwork budget for the project is $70,000
