An ensemble of some of the greatest musicians alive today, individually famous for their unique work, will perform together for a once in a lifetime live jazz performance, mid-September, for the 11th annual Jazz Legends in Concert LIVE, hosted by Al and Marilyn Cook.

"These musicians are the best players in the world," Cook said, and they will come together for an extraordinary jazz concert as well as student invitational master classes offered to University of Arizona and high school students.

The concert will take place on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m., and discounted packages-- including resort accommodations, prime seating for the concert and a complimentary dinner-- are on sale to make this weekend one to remember.

The Musicians

He has composed and orchestrated for ABC, CBS, and HBO television features, motion pictures and symphonies worldwide.

The All Music Guide says "Shelly Berg is one of the finest pianists around the early twenty-first century, playing modern mainstream jazz." His 2005 CD Blackbird (Concord) reached number one in United States jazz radio (Jazzweek) and garnered Record of the Year and Artist of the Year nominations. Throughout the golden age of jazz in Hollywood, he played with Stan Kenton, Harry James, Charlie Barnet, Stan Getz, Benny Carter, Billy May, Benny Goodman and Terry Gibbs.

Capp recorded often with the Andre Previn Trio and worked for years with Red Skelton and Steve Allen on their television shows. At the same time, he played with great singers from Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee to Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. This long-time studio musician has played on 200 motion picture sound tracks with many of Hollywood's most notable composers. Capp has participated in countless recording sessions and, starting in the 1970's, recorded extensively in a variety of settings for Concord, a leading jazz label.

Houston PersonTENOR SAXOPHONE

Houston Person, master of the tenor saxophone, is back this year after thrilling the audience during the 2009 Jazz Legends in Concert LIVE. Person, a blues-oriented player with a large, warm sound, thrills his audiences everywhere with his interpretations of great American jazz and show tunes. His playing honors the great traditions of Gene Ammons, Illinios Jacquet, Stan Getz, and, before them, Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins. Person began working with Etta Jones in 1973, which continued for nearly thirty years, until her passing in 2001. Person still plays in clubs like Lenox Lounge in Harlem to stay true to the roots of American jazz, but also tours around the world. Person has produced his own albums, as well as records for many other artists, while remaining in great demand for jazz events and festivals all over America.

Allred coached actor Dan Ackroyd how to appear as if he were playing the tuba, for the major motion picture My Girl, and recorded the tuba parts for the soundtrack. The Concert

Hosts Al and Marilyn Cook began the Jazz Legends concert series in their backyard 11 years ago, as a fundraiser for the arts council.

"The first party was in our home," Cook said. The star was famous Hollywood jazz clarinetist, Abe Most, Cook said.

"It attracted 40 people, and it was rained out," Cook said. Despite the weather, the show went on inside Cook's home and was a huge success, introducing the annual series of jazz concerts that have followed.

Three years later, the Cook's backyard concert grew to 180 people and, since the concert required more space then their yard would allow, was moved to the Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort, 10000 N. Oracle Rd., for the years following. The popular jazz concert has attracted larger audiences each year.

Three ticket options are available for this year's Jazz Legends concert, beginning at $25 for lawn seats, $50 for poolside reserved seats and $85 for a unique combination, which includes a three-course dinner prior to the concert and poolside reserved seats. In addition, a discounted package for two is available, which includes overnight accommodations at the resort.

All the monies raised from this spectacular event will go directly back to local schools to support dwindling music and art programs. Also, the master classes arranged for university and high school students bring music students face-to-face with these world-renowned musicians.

"These world-class musicians are wonderful to hear," Cook said.

"In concert, they rivet the audience with brilliantly played music, and in classes with music students," Cook said, "these musicians are a real inspiration to those who someday hope to be just as famous."

"You have to be there to experience it," Cook said.
